The Workout Room

Does anyone else have a neglected room that somehow became used for storage but you know that it has the potential to be so much more? This room sits between the garage and backyard, but is the perfect space for a workout room, and I wanted to be strategic to keep it budget friendly but of course maximize the design. And therein lies the beauty of paint; it has the ability to transform a room that my clients can update as their design preferences and needs for their home evolve.
I opted to design a mural for fun and visual interest, and was very inspired by the Sherwin-Williams 2024 Colormix® Forecast, Anthology: Volume One, a new, biennial trend report that explores the directional shifts in the landscape through a collection of 48 hues organized by four chromatic color families.
Specifically, I was inspired by the warm, saturated hues of their Reds and Purples palette since I wanted to bring in energy and femininity to the room. I was in instant love with Wild Currant SW 7583 and Sashay Sand SW 6051, so I made those the primary mural colors. Then I complemented them with Tricorn Black SW 6258, Peppercorn SW 7674, and Heron Plume SW 6070. I chose Sherwin-Williams Emerald® Interior Acrylic Latex paint for this project as it has exceptional coverage and transformed the walls with a beautiful finish.
The goal of this mural was to make it feel like color-blocking while bringing my unique style through creating curves in the mural, adding a nuanced touch. I started by drafting the elevations of the room in AutoCAD, then began the sketching and rendering process on my iPad. While rendering, I kept editing and developing the design until I had my desired result.
But before painting started, there was a lot of work to be done, including removing the old baseboard (to be replaced with a smart unit that could be controlled from my phone and blow cold air), a lot of patchwork, and a very deep cleaning.
BEFORE:
And then, voila (voila meaning after a contractor and electrician came, the new HVAC unit was installed, new carpet tiles were installed, a new TV was mounted, etc. etc. etc.).
AFTER:
I'm very happy with the end result! I love the quality and the color saturation of the Emerald® Interior Acrylic Latex paint. For designers, it’s important that the paint color looks rich and well saturated, and because I wanted this room to feel energized, the color saturation was vital. So I highly recommend checking out these colors at your neighborhood Sherwin-Williams and using Anthology: Volume One for inspiration that your clients will love.

Love how you used paint as the budget-friendly game-changer here, especially pulling those warm saturated hues from the Anthology report for the mural—such a smart way to evolve the room over time. I’ve got a similar “storage room” that’s begging for a second life, so this hit home. By the way, I keep a free Satisfactory production calculator I like to share: https://satisfactorycalculator.net/
This renovation story is incredibly inspiring for anyone turning neglected storage space into a dedicated workout zone. I admire your detailed design workflow, from AutoCAD drafts to iPad renderings, and the vibrant curved mural built around Sherwin-Williams’ 2024 Colormix palette feels full of energizing warmth. The smart HVAC upgrade and budget-conscious paint-focused makeover offer great actionable ideas. Could you share a step-by-step breakdown of how you sketched and mapped the curved mural onto the walls in a follow-up post? --times table
After spending a little time on the interface, I found it very user-friendly. It’s easy to navigate and visually well-balanced.
I checked out the interface, and I like how it’s structured. It’s simple but still gives you all the information you need without confusion.
